A funny thing happens when I stop trying to be productive.

Our director Craig shares a personal experience…

When I stop forcing being productive, I get more done!

Surfing has been one of the best reminders of that for me.

Not because I’m chasing big waves or ticking off another “hobby milestone”… but because it forces a kind of stillness you can’t fake.

You’re out there, waiting.

Watching the water.

Breathing.

And for long stretches, doing absolutely nothing that looks useful on paper.

But inside, something resets.

In the creative world, I see the opposite pattern all the time.

Freelancers who are always “on”:

  • always available
  • always replying
  • always thinking about the next job
  • always worrying about the quiet patches

It’s understandable. Creative work isn’t linear. It comes in bursts. And when it’s busy, it can feel risky to step away.

But constant motion has a cost.

Sometimes the most professional thing you can do is switch off.

Go for a walk without your phone.

Sit and stare out the window.

Do something physical that brings you back into your body.

Let your brain have a moment where it isn’t solving anything.

Because energy doesn’t only come from pushing harder.

It also comes from pausing long enough to hear yourself think again.

If you’ve been running hot lately, consider this permission to stop doing quite so much.

And if you want to talk about building a steadier rhythm around your work and money — one that leaves room for actual life — feel free to get in touch
