Try focusing on something specific. The Hindus have a word, or utterance, called the Om. They chant it and think about it and focus on it. It’s the breath and the heartbeat of everything. Siddartha by Hesse is a good explaination of this kind of thought. Its short and a good read. Give it a try.

Try a dark room, no sounds, no tv no nothing and focus on a point on the wall, leave your eyes open and focus.
Sometimes some music in the background will help. I recommend finding a cd of native american flute music.

Ommmmmmmmm, Yes, try that. Sit in quiet room (no noise), close your eyes, breach gently and deep, slowely chant Ommmmmmmm. It works.

Your problem is very common. The solution is easy. Find someone who knows mantra meditation. The mantra (sound) is used to calm the mind. You will be releasing unwanted stress from the nervous system, so be prepared to have some thinking. The more you meditate the less thinking will be happening. Ultimately you want to have a mind that becomes less reactive. Good luck on your search.

Try using a poster or postcard of a Tibetan mandala to gaze at, or a large crystal to gaze at, or a shallow bowl of water to gaze at. Burn incense, and concentrate on your breathing and relaxation.
Eventually you will calm your monkey-mind– at this point you have little self control, but you will get it right if you continue.

I have the same problem. I tried to meditate all my life and I find it very hard. I still try. I’m taking yoga lessons, read a lot on the Internet, read books from the library, and recently downloaded some e-books where teachers guide you through meditation.
You can’t think about stop thinking cos there you are thinking. So you have to treat your mind, concentrating in something outside your mind, like a noise, hear the noises around you, imagine nice things like you on a beach with the ones you love. Use your imagination, get lost in your own world. I love to imagine than I’m flying inside my body, and that my body is a universe, and that i can heal everything i touch, see or think about. If you really believe in something then your body will believe it too, and then that will became true, real.
I love the “Brian Weiss Meditation Guide”, and the “Beginner’s Guide to Meditation”.

What helps me too to relax is to laugh, i watched on video.google some funny guys, Dane Cook i loved him!!! And he is hot
We are taught on how to go faster, but never on how to stop.

This is a very common problem. It is key not to try to stop the thoughts. Instead try to shift your focus. Some of the other answerers have suggested mantras. This should work well. Alternatively, you can count your breaths, focus on your breaths, or focus on a spot on the wall.
It is important not to get frustrated. If you find the thoughts creeping in, gently guide your attention back to your intended focus. Eventually, the thoughts will run their course.

The Qigong masters understood a practise called the three regulations.
If you can still your mind and body; your breath will relax of it’s own accord.
If you can still your body and breath; your mind will become still of it;s own accord.
If you can still your mind and your breath the body will become still of it;s own accord.
You CAN still your mind is you can sit still and slow your breathing a bit.
I think my zen brochure will help.
